Down to a Rupee

G.R.N. Somashekar

Tomato prices have crashed on excess production, leaving farmers in the lurch, particularly in Karnataka. The prices have dropped to as low as 80 paise a kg in wholesale markets in places such as Kolar, Mandya, Mysore and Hassan. Even in the Bangalore retail market, tomatoes are being sold at throwaway prices of Rs 1.25-2 a kg depending on the variety.
