AT A STANDSTILL: The normally busy Abids, a major city centre in Hyderabad, has none of the usual crowds on Tuesday due to the Statewide bandh to protest the murder of Mr Paritala Ravi, MLA, in Anantapur district on Monday. - A. Roy Chowdhury

Hyderabad , Jan. 25

THE State Government has decided to go in for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the killing of the Telugu Desam legislator, Mr Paritala Ravi, in Anantapur on Monday.

The State Cabinet, which met here on Tuesday to take stock of the situation following the killing and the State-wide bandh by the Telugu Desam Party, has decided to request the Centre to facilitate the CBI inquiry.

Announcing this, the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, said the decision was taken to ensure a foolproof inquiry as his son, Mr Jaganmohan Reddy, Panchayat Raj Minister, Mr J. C. Diwakar Reddy, and the IPS officer, Mr R. P. Meena, figured in the FIR.

Meanwhile, the bandh call given by the Telugu Desam Party crippled life in the State, including Hyderabad. Hundreds of TDP activists were taken into custody . Angry mobs attacked Government offices and properties of Congress leaders.

The AP State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC), which bore the brunt on Monday as TDP activists burnt 60 buses and damaged 350 buses, withdrew its services as a precautionary measure. Trains were also held up for hours in Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam and other places. A young girl was mowed down in an accident in Machilipatnam.

Top TDP and Bharatiya Janata Party leaders, led by its President and former chief minister, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, attended Ravi's funeral at Venkatapuram, his native place in Anantapur district, on Tuesday evening.

Thousands of Ravi's followers and villagers from all over the district thronged Venkatapuram. They gave vent to their ire against policemen and pelted stones as they tried to enter the village. Two constables were seriously injured in the incident.

Allegations and counter-allegations flew thick and fast, a day after the gory murder on Monday.
