New Delhi , Jan. 27

THE Union Cabinet on Thursday gave its approval to declare the Srinagar domestic airport as an "international airport."

Briefing newspersons after the Cabinet meeting, the Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Mr Jaipal Reddy, said declaring Srinagar as an international airport will offer improved connectivity and wider choice of services at competitive cost for travellers. He added that this was likely to boost international tourism and economic development of the region.

The Srinagar airport belongs to the Indian Air Force, and the Airports Authority of India maintains a civil enclave for operation of civilian flights. Currently, international Haj flights also operate from Srinagar. The existing terminal building and apron are being extended and other facilities being made available to accommodate wider aircraft and more passengers.
