Visakhapatnam , Jan. 27

THE Visakhapatnam port is still maintaining the lead in cargo throughput among major ports in the country for the fifth year by handling about 40 million tonnes in the current fiscal, according to the Chairman, Mr K. Ratna Kishore.

He was speaking at the Diamond Jubilee Stadium on the occasion of the Republic Day. He said the port had handled 1.2 million tonnes more in the current year than during the corresponding period of the previous year.

The ore handling complex of the port had handled a record 10 million tonnes of iron ore in the first nine months, which enabled the port to retain its prime position.

He appreciated the services of the employees for registering the lowest ever average pre-berthing retention of less than an hour and turnaround time from 3.4 days to 3.2 days.

The output per ship berth day stood at 11,700 tonnes, an increase of 3 per cent over last year.

Mr Kishore said the outer harbour would be upgraded for handling 2,00,000 dwt vessels and there were plans to strengthen and deepen the general cargo berths to handle 1,25,000 dwt vessels.
