Mumbai , Jan. 27

`SAY no to noise pollution' is the special theme for this year's fourth Rotary Day for the deaf, on January 30. In Mumbai, the day will be marked with free hearing-related camps for senior citizens above 50 years.

Rotary International District 3140, comprising around 130 Rotary Clubs around Mumbai, Thane, Dombivli, Vashi and Kalyan will be observing the `Rotary Day for the Deaf' by spreading awareness about hearing impairment.

Looking at educating people on hearing-related problems — prevention, detection and treatment — deafness camps will be conducted in Mumbai, Thane, Kalyan, Navi Mumbai and Dombivali, according to a release from the organisers.

Senior citizens will be given free hearing aid trials and deafness check-ups. Free or concessional follow-ups will also be provided to patients who require it, the release added.

According to Dr K.B. Bhargava, an ENT surgeon and convenor of the day, over an estimated 12 lakh people suffer from hearing-related problems in the Mumbai region itself. Deafness is a serious disability that requires special attention and professional treatment. This year the focus is on noise pollution, as it is one of the primary factors in causing deafness related problems Mumbai, he said.

Over 34 deafness clinics, ENT specialists and hearing centres will participate in the initiative.
