New Delhi , Jan. 27

THE Union Cabinet today approved a national project for repair, renovation and restoration of water bodies directly linked to agriculture.

A meeting of the Cabinet, chaired by the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, also gave its approval to the Centre for incurring an expenditure of Rs 225 crore as 75 per cent share of the total scheme outlay of the Rs 300-crore project. The remaining Rs 75 crore will be the State share.

The national project, to be completed in seven to 10 years, will be implemented by the State Governments. The scheme would help restore and augment storage capacities of water bodies and recover and extend the irrigation potential.

The Detailed Project Reports prepared by the States would spell out the graded monitoring mechanism for the scheme, stated an official release. State Monitoring Committees would incorporate Central Water Commission (CWC) representative from their regional offices.
