Fiat against Vellayani lake conversion

Our Bureau

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Human Rights Commission has stayed a State Government-sponsored move to promote paddy farming on a portion of the Vellayani Lake flanking the Capital City.

The Commission member, Mr S. Varghese, issued a directive to this effect on Thursday keeping the Government order in abeyance till further orders. The Commission appointed Mr C. Sundaresan, Dean, Faculty of Agriculture, College of Agriculture, Vellayani, as a commission to study the problems related to the lake and suggest steps to preserve it as a freshwater resource.

The case has been posted to March. Earlier this month, the panel had initiated proceedings against the lake conversion move after residents of the neighbourhood launched a resistance movement.
