Nihilent forays into CMMI consulting

Our Bureau

Pune , Jan. 28

NIHILENT Technologies has announced its entry into the new technology consulting services space of CMMI (capability maturity model integration).

CMMI is a globally acknowledged framework to assess and improve the software development capabilities of companies and lays emphasis on quantitative and statistical methods, both at the organisational level and in actual implementation of projects.

Nihilent itself is one of the few companies that have been assessed for the advanced SEI-CMMI Level 5.

"Developing reliable and usable software is a difficult task to implement for many organisations, with common problems being late deliveries, price overshoots, functionality or quality problems," said Mr Minoo Dastur, Chief Operating Officer.

"The complex nature of software amplifies the problems as projects increase in size and importance and an effective way of tackling these issues is through a focussed effort to improve the organisation's processes."

Nihilent's CMM/CMMI consulting group will now tap the rising need for companies in the software development space to improve processes and productivity and will help software companies establish and deploy world-class engineering practices and processes that are in compliance with SEI's Capability Maturity Model.

The company is targeting the vast spectrum of software companies and software divisions of organisations and will offer training and consultancy and SEI authorised CMM/CMMI appraisals.

The company right now has two assessors on board and will take the number up to six in the next three years, according to Mr Ashok Sontakke, Vice-President (Quality & Process) and Head of the CMMI Consulting Services Group.

"We will share our expertise and experience in the field of quality by offering to partner with clients throughout their quality initiative. Clients opting for CMMI process and certification spend an estimated $30,000-50,000 to engage the service provider who offers assessment of their software processes, plans improvement, implement change and measure results."

Last year, some 2,500 CMM/CMMI assessments were done, but only 40 companies globally got CMMI certification, he added.

Nihilent expects at least upwards of 20 clients in the first year of operations in the new business and is tapping clients in South Africa, India, the US, the UK and China.
