Public Sector Banks Industry & Economy - Natural Calamities Chidambaram urges banks to speed up tsunami relief Our Bureau
New Delhi , Jan. 28 THE Finance Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram, today urged public sector banks to clear applications received for tsunami relief within 48 hours. However, the applicants should be eligible for the loan. In his meeting with Chief Executives of public sector banks, Mr P. Chidambaram discussed a special relief package that would provide interest and capital subsidies to banks extending loans to fishermen who have suffered on account of tsunami. Briefing newspersons after the meeting, Secretary, Financial Sector, Mr N.S. Sisodia, said that the package includes special assistance for the fishery sector and housing sector The meeting also reviewed progress of loans to agriculture, rural housing, education loans, credit to small and medium enterprises and loan for infrastructure. The other issues that were taken up include technology implementation, managerial autonomy and corporate governance, Mr Sisodia said. He said that the agenda also included discussion on mergers among PSU banks. "The discussions were of a general nature, but no roadmap was drawn up," Mr Sisodia said.
