Leather footwear exporters for tapping domestic market

Our Bureau

Chennai , Jan. 30

LEADING leather footwear exporters have acknowledged the need to tap the domestic market to expand the industry. But the lack of organised distribution channels is a stumbling block that can be removed when the market is opened to international players, they said.

Addressing the annual meeting of the leather research and industry get-together `Lerig 2005' here, the Chairman of the Council for Leather Exports, Mr Rafeeque Ahmed, said the lack of an organised distribution system was a handicap. But with import duties coming down, overseas players are eyeing the Indian market and would enter the country in two or three years.

The growth of the leather footwear industry is closely linked to the growth of the textile industry the world over. In India, there has been a lag but the gap is closing. This represents a huge potential market that industries can tap, said Mr Ahmed.

He said the footwear industry, which exports over $690 million a year, hoped to double its exports by 2010.

Dr S. Ramachandran, Chairman, Research Council, Central Leather Research Institute, urged the industry to not ignore the domestic industry, where people were spending more on footwear than ever before. Apart from the exporter segment, there was a large decentralised production base that should be exposed to technology development.

Mr M.S. Srinivasan, Additional Secretary, Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, stressed the importance of research and industry collaboration. In tech-savvy countries, technology is the driver of growth, whether it is information technology or biotechnology.
