Kerala Minister favours Rs 75/kg MSP for arecanut

Mangalore , Jan. 31

THE Kerala Forest Minister, Mr K.P. Vishwanathan, has said that arecanut growers should be given a minimum support price of Rs 75 a kg to balance the production cost.

A press release by the Central Arecanut and Cocoa Marketing and Processing Cooperative (Campco) Ltd said here on Monday that Mr Vishwanathan was speaking after inaugurating the Kerala Government's subsidy scheme to stabilise arecanut market, in Trissur recently.

The Kerala Government has appointed Campco as the nodal agency to implement the Rs 10-crore subsidy scheme.

Under this, if the market price of arecanut goes below Rs 60 a kg, the difference amount - up to a maximum of Rs 10 - will be borne by Campco using the subsidy amount.

The Minister said the scheme, which will come to an end in March, should be extended up to June.

The Campco Director, Mr Karunakaran Nambiar, urged the growers to sell arecanut through Campco. This will help in curbing tax-evading areca traders, he added.
