Sree Chitra Tirunal Inst plans `Quit tobacco' clinic

Our Bureau

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute of Medical Sciences and Technology plans to set up a `quit-tobacco' clinic as part of its public health initiative.

The clinic will be part of the tobacco cessation research and training programme being undertaken by the Achutha Menon Centre for Health Science Studies affiliated to the institute.

The centre is the Indian partner in an ongoing five-year multi-country tobacco cessation project.

Five institutes of public health - Gadjah Mada University, Indonesia; Universities of Minnesota, Arizona and Missouri-Kansas City in the US, apart from the Achutha Menon Centre - will be the research partners in the project being funded by Fogarty International Centre, National Institute of Health in the US.

The project aims to build research capacity for tobacco cessation in India. It will also develop culturally appropriate tobacco cessation programmes and co-operate with other institutions and groups working in the field.
