CII proposes feasibility report for new airports

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Feb. 1

THE Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has suggested that an economic feasibility report be prepared for all new greenfield airport projects.

In a statement, the chamber has said that under circumstances where airports are required to be constructed as infrastructure facilities, the Government shall make a special sanction to the Airport Authority of India (AAI) for the construction, management and maintenance costs of such airports.

The suggestion has been made to avoid huge costs, which the AAI has to incur at present. The authority manages 126 airports, of which 40 are non-operational. In spite of this, AAI spends a considerable amount on maintenance and management.

The statement has emphasised on the need for airports equipping themselves for the rapidly growing cargo and parcel traffic.

Pointing out that multi-modal capability is crucial for efficient and cost-effective passenger and cargo handling, the chamber has said that all airports should be well-connected with other forms of surface transport. The chamber has said that the rapid growth and sophistication of the civil aviation sector should become a national priority, given the growing share it is poised to have in India's GDP growth.
