WTO Next G-20 meet to be held in Delhi Our Bureau
New Delhi , Feb. 1 INDIA would host the meeting of the G-20, a group of WTO member countries on agriculture, in New Delhi on March 18 following a consensus on this among members at the G-20 meeting held in Davos last Saturday. An official release issued here said that along with the G-20 meeting of like-minded countries on agricultural issues to be taken up in the WTO, there would be a meeting of the G-33, a group of WTO member countries who are pushing for special products, special safeguard mechanism and market access on March 19. Mr Nath said that besides focusing on agriculture, the G-20 discussions could also encompass other areas of interest such as non-agricultural market access (NAMA) which was backed by other G-20 members such as Chile, Pakistan and South Africa. Mr Nath also took part in the informal meeting of trade ministers from 26 member countries of the WTO, including Europe, North America and G-20 developing countries in Davos on January 29. The trade ministers agreed on the need for a successful end to the negotiations on modalities for agriculture and NAMA by the next ministerial conference of the WTO in Hong Kong in December. They also stressed that there should be overall balance in the different areas of negotiations such as agriculture, NAMA, services, rules and trade facilitation so as to ensure equitable results for all, particularly developing countries.
