Trade bandh a success, says TN chamber

Our Correspondent

Madurai , Feb. 1

THE Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry has said the `All-India Trade Bandh' called today a resounding success.

In a statement here, Mr S. Rethinavelu, Chamber President, has welcomed the announcement by the Union Finance Minister extending the last date for registration with the Excise Department up to February 28 and the constitution of a high-level committee to look into all aspects and ramifications of the levy and make appropriate recommendation to the Government.

Apart from New Delhi-based federations, representatives from trade and industrial bodies should be included in the high-level committee, he said.

He appealed to the Finance Minister to opt for the immediate withdrawal of service tax levied on lorry freight charges.

The Madurai District Tiny and Small Scale Industries Association has appealed for the inclusion of industry associations in the proposed committee.
