A DOUBLE-digit decline in both exports and sales of the Maruti 800 has resulted in a 1.2 per cent dip in Maruti Udyog's total sales during January.

The company sold 48,544 vehicles in January (including 3,244 units of exports) against 49,141 units in January 2004. While exports dipped by 32.9 per cent to 3,244 units, sales of the Maruti 800 declined by 37.1 per cent to 9,625 units in January. However, Maruti said that domestic sales of 45,300 units in January were its highest-ever monthly sales in the market.

Sales of the compact car Alto were also at the highest ever, with the company selling 13,117 units in the month.

Maruti's volume in the domestic compact car segment (comprising the Alto, Wagon R and Esteem) grew by 21 per cent, while the combined sales of the Esteem and the Baleno jumped by 140 per cent.
