Revival package for Vizag units

Visakhapatnam , Feb. 2

A PACKAGE to revive 11 sick units in Visakhapatnam district has been prepared with an outlay of Rs 5.58 crore, according to Mr L. Laxman, General Manager of the District Industries Centre.

These units have been selected from among 14based on the feedback provided by the AP Industrial Technical Consultancy Organisation (APITCO) and other agencies. One of them, a bread-making unit, has already been revived.

The APITCO, the Small Industries Service Institute and the AP Productivity Council held a meeting with the owners of the sick units on July 12 and 13 last year.

The meeting identified 211 sick units of which 14 were with investments above Rs 5 lakh. However, three of the unit owners did not evince interest in getting them revived. "The dues from the units to banks, the Transco and commercial taxes will be rescheduled. They will be provided working capital from the State Financial Corporation, small industry branches of banks and other financial institutions,'' Mr Laxman said here on Wednesday.

Among the units are those making PVC cables, pipes, pressure vessels for industrial use, gas welding equipment, timber flush doors and LPG bottling, according to the Deputy Director of Industries, Mr. K.P. Krishna.

The Union Government conducted the third all-India Small Scale Industries Census through the DICs last year. The census found that 3,600 units, including micro units with investments ranging up to Rs 60,000 in the district had gone sick.

The total investment in the units employing 7,896 persons was estimated at Rs 27 crore.

``The survey also identified 126 viable units,'' Mr Krishna said and added that a meeting scheduled for Friday would discuss revival of the sick units.
