CBEC working on single data centre

Chennai , Feb. 4

IN a year's time, trade in India would be dealing only in the electronic form with all issues related to the Customs, Central Excise and service tax.

The Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) has taken up massive information technology initiatives that would integrate the three departments, and provide the trade with a centralised data server, according to Mr A.K. Raha, Director-General, Directorate of Systems, CBEC.

Work on a single data centre is under way, and the total investment for the consolidated infrastructure is expected to be over Rs 150 crore. This proposal is before the Cabinet for approval, which is expected shortly, he told Business Line at the sidelines of a meeting here.

The integration is expected to happen by September, he said.

In his interaction with the members of the Madras Chamber of Commerce and Industry on issues related to automation taken up by the CBEC, Mr Raha said the software for EV09 (Excise Vision 09) project, which is being developed by Wipro Ltd and deals right from registration with Central Excise up to paying duty online, would be ready by June.

"We are planning to completely remove manual intervention, and help the trade achieve cost and time benefits through this electronic governance," he said. Another major step in automation is 100 per cent dematerialisation of excise challans from April 1, he said.
