"The purifier has a processor that is based on sustained chlorine release technology."

Chennai , Feb. 4

HINDUSTAN Lever Ltd (HLL) has entered the Rs 8,000-crore branded water business with the launch of Pureit, a water purifier.

The product, which is priced at Rs 1,500, was launched in Chennai on Thursday through 14 Pureit zones. These zones are in all the main localities in the city and will educate customers on the use and benefits of Pureit.

The product will subsequently be rolled out in other parts of Tamil Nadu followed by other cities in the country.

The purifier has a `Germkill Processor' that is based on sustained chlorine release technology to kill all viruses and bacteria. It also has carbon trap technology to remove parasites and pesticides without compromising the desired flow rate and the polisher improves water clarity, removes odour and gives good taste, said Mr Yuri Jain, General Manager, Water, HLL.

The germkill battery kit, which costs Rs 250, will last for about 1,500 litres.

Mr Dhaval Buch, Vice-President, Water, HLL, said that over 100 scientists have worked on this technology and that it has taken the company about five years to make the product affordable and easy to use.

HLL decided to enter this segment because of the demand for good drinking waterin the country, Mr Buch said.

More than one billion people do not have access to safe drinking water.

In the developing world, 80 per cent of all diseases are water borne.

Mr Jain said that research has shown that most customers boil water to make it safe for drinking.

The product meets the guidelines defined in the US for protection against viruses, bacteria and parasites, he said.
