Events Plastics exposition to be held in Chennai from Feb 25-28 Our Correspondent
Madurai , Feb. 4 AN Indian plastics exposition, "IPLEX `05" will be held from February 25-28 in Chennai at the Trade Centre, Nandambakkam. The plastics exhibition is being organised for the first time in South India and especially in Chennai. The exhibitionoffers an opportunity for the existing and prospective entrepreneurs in the southern States to know about the latest technologies and their applications in automobiles, agriculture, horticulture, information technology, communication electronics, training and testing centres and a score of others, according to Mr C.K. Sekar, President of the Tamil Nadu Plastics Manufacturers' Association and Chairman, IPLEX `05. "Hitherto, the entrepreneurs had to go to Mumbai and Delhi for such exhibitions. The distance, cost and lack of awareness held back many entrepreneurs," he said during the launch function of the exhibition in Madurai recently. Making a presentation on the occasion over the plastics scenario in the country and South India in particular, the Convenor of the exhibition, Mr B. Swaminathan, said the expanding use of plastics and its projected requirements into the future offered good scope for 12,000 more plastics processing units in South India. At present, the per capita consumption of plastics is 4.1 kg. This is expected to rise to 5.6 kg by 2010. Similarly, the present consumption of 8.5 lakh tonnes of plastics is projected to touch 13.5 lakh tonnes. Unless there is capacity expansion, the needs of people and industry could not be met. The problem of pollution affecting the very existence of the industry held no threat any more, he explained. The exhibition, organised by the PlastIndia Foundation, Central Institute of Plastics and Engineering Technologyand the respective Plastics Manufacturers' Associations of the four southern States would exhibit latest machineries, raw materials and additives. More than 200 exhibitors from India and abroad would be taking part. A two-day seminar on `Global opportunities in plastics' is being arranged on February 26-27, for which the faculty would be from India and abroad. The Tamil Nadu Plastics Manufacturers' Association is arranging a seminar exclusively for new entrepreneurs. The entry fee for public to the exhibition is Rs 10 per head.
