VISAKHAPATNAM: The State Warehousing Corporation plans to build more godowns and increase storage space to help the farmers in the State, according to its Chairman, Mr S. Ramakrishna Reddy. Mr Reddy, who assumed charge recently, said at a press meet here on Friday that the corporation at present has 72 godowns of its own and 72 investor godowns, with a total capacity of roughly 21 lakh tonnes.

More godowns would be constructed, he said. "The present Government is committed to the cause of farmers. The farmers can store the produce in the godowns and take pledge loans from banks. Distress sale of farm produce can be prevented," he said.

The SWC at present has 500 employees. It is understaffed and the strength would have to be increased, Mr Reddy said. The corporation has been making a profit, Mr Reddy said. It earns Rs 15 crore-Rs 20 crore a year while expenditure amounts to Rs 5 crore. "We are not in the red and there need be no apprehensions over the future of the corporation," he added.
