Kerala Budget mum on allocation to tourism sector

Our Bureau

Thiruvananthapuram , Feb. 6

WHILE taking note of the importance of Kerala's tourism sector, the State's Budget for 2005-06 does not make any mention of allocations to the sector. The focus in the coming fiscal will be on completing all ongoing projects, the Budget says.

The Budget says that water sports tourism and adventure tourism will be given priority in the next financial year. It also emphasises on the development of at least one tourist centre in each district of the State.

The Kumbalangi Tourism Village in Ernakulam district and the Coir Village in Alappuzha will serve as models for developing rural tourism projects across the State.

Pilgrimage tourism circuits will be developed, connecting pilgrim centres in the State, it adds.

Kerala Tourism will extend its marketing efforts to South East Asia and the US. The Budget proposes that steps will be taken to obtain University and AICTE approval for courses conducted by the Kerala Institute of Tourism and Travel Studies.

Several new courses will be started at the institute as part of efforts to improve the quality of human resources in the State's tourism sector.

According to the Kerala Economic Review-2004, the State's tourism sector accounts for approximately eight lakh jobs, both direct and indirect. The State's earnings from tourism increased by 39 per cent from Rs 705.67 crore in 2002 to Rs 983.37 crore in 2003.
