SGS India plans services for auto industry

SGS India Pvt Ltd, part of the $2-billion SGS group offering quality certification facilities, plans to launch certification services for the automobile industry.

SGS India's Managing Director, Mr Claude Lanouhe, in an informal chat with presspersons at the inaugural of its laboratory for life sciences services, here on Sunday, said that the company is planning regulatory inspection-based services for automotive industry.

As an independent third party provider of quality certification services, SGS is into automotive certification in Europe, the US, Spain and Africa.

While declining to elaborate on the volume of investments, he said that the project is in the initial stages but "could involve huge investments."

It will install full control stations for cars and heavy vehicles and carry out the mandatory checks needed under the regulations in India.

It has introduced spare parts testing facilities at Gurgaon in Haryana, where it has set up a `Weatherometer' equipment capable of testing the performance of vehicle parts under extreme conditions. Leading automobile manufacturers avail of their facilities, he said.

At the inauguration of SGS's 14,000 sq ft laboratory at the Ticel Biopark, a biotechnology park, Mr Lanouhe said that the company has entered into an agreement with Indian Oil for quality certification of its products.

Its quality certification and analysis laboratory for life sciences would cater to the needs of the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. Life sciences' contribution to the company's turnover was on the increase, he said.

SGS has its head office in Geneva and has a presence in 140 countries with more than 845 offices and 340 laboratories. It offers third party inspection, verification and certification services in various sectors including food and agriculture, automotive industry, minerals, trade assurance and technology manpower supply.
