EXPERTS have reiterated the need to have clarity in regulation for neutraceuticals.

While many participants at the Neutraceutical Summit here on Sunday called for treating of dietary food supplements as food rather than as pharmaceutical, the Drugs Controller General (India), Dr Ashwini Kumar, said that the issue need to be further studied before taking a final stand on it.

"While from the response at the summit, it appears that health food supplements should be treated as food and thus be under the Food Laws, however, the issue is more complex than it appears," said Dr Kumar speaking at summit.

Various companies make very strong claims about their food supplements, thus one needs stronger evidence on claims. "A consumer needs to know whether the claims would be delivered," Dr Kumar said.
