EVEN as India hopes to attract more tourists than its current arrivals, which touched more than four million, Hong Kong has been reaping the benefit of the large outbound tourism from the country.
Indian visitors to Hong Kong in 2004 were estimated at 2,44,364, the highest in a year, according to the Hong Kong Tourism Board.
The arrivals in Hong Kong represents 37.2 per cent growth compared with 2003.
A strong overall December performance took arrivals to Hong Kong to 21.8 million, outstripping the tourism board's forecast of 21.36 million and improving by nearly one-third on the previous annual record of 16.57 million in 2002.
Overall growth for the year was 40.4 per cent, compared with 2003, when Hong Kong was badly affected by the impact of SARS in the second quarter of the year.
The board's Executive Director, Ms Clara Chong, said that the 2004 results reflected Hong Kong's continued strong appeal as a destination in the face of ever-growing competition.
She said it would take a while longer to make accurate assessments as to what impact, if any, the Indian Ocean tsunamis would have on travel to and within Asia in the coming months.
