MADURAI: A proposal to convert the National Highway from Nagapattinam to Karur, passing through Tiruvarur, Needamangalam, Tiruchi and Kulitalai, is under consideration.

The four-lane road is estimated to cost Rs 1,100 crore, according to the Union Minister for Shipping, Surface Transport and Highways, Mr T.R. Baalu.

Accompanied by officials from his department and the Union Minister of State for Finance, Mr Palani Manickam, Mr Baalu, recently on an inspection visit of sites for laying bypass roads around Vallam, near Thanjavur, and Needamangalam, in Tiruvarur district, said at Thanjavur the tenders would be finalised by September and the works would start immediately. The works are estimated to cost Rs 20 crore and Rs 85 crore, respectively.

He further said the Nagapattinam Port had good scope to be developed into a major port, and the proposal has to come from the State government for the purpose, the sources added.
