THE Kerala Industries Minister, Mr V.K. Ebrahim Kunju, on Tuesday inaugurated a Russian trade information centre at the Russian Cultural Centre in the city.

On the occasion, he said there is a need to strengthen trade and tourism relations between Kerala and Russia. The State Government will provide all possible support to Russian businessmen looking to invest in Kerala, he added.

The Ambassador of the Russian Federation in India, Mr Vyacheslav Ivanovich Trubnikov, who was present, said steps must be taken to develop `civilian' trade relations between India and Russia.

Though today's Russia is not well known in India, it has much to offer tourists from the country, he pointed out. Hence, Russia, as a tourist destination, must be aggressively marketed in India.

Similarly, Kerala too must be aggressively promoted in Russia, he said. The Russian Ambassador, who visited the Koodamkulam nuclear power station in Tamil Nadu on Monday, hoped the project would be completed by 2007-2008.

The Koodamkulam power station, being built with Russian involvement, will be an important contribution to India's energy sector, he said.

Besides tourism products, Kerala should also look at promoting its ethnic food and ayurveda in Russia, said Dr G.C. Gopala Pillai, Managing Director of the Kerala Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation.

He also spoke of the need to prepare an action plan outlining measures to develop trade and tourism ties between Kerala and Russia.

Initial efforts to market Kerala tourism in Russia appear to be yielding results, said Mr E.M. Najeeb, Chairman and Managing Director, Air Travel Enterprises India Ltd.

Over the past year, more than 50 Russian tour operators have visited Kerala. The first charter flight with Russian tourists arrived in Kerala last month and more such flights are expected over the next several weeks, he added.
