KFDC staff plea against closure

Our Bureau

Mangalore , Feb. 8

EMPLOYEES of the Karnataka Fisheries Development Corporation (KFDC) have urged the State Government not to close down the corporation.

Addressing presspersons here on Tuesday, the president of the KFDC Employees' Union, Mr K. Sadashiva Shetty, said that the corporation has been working for the development of the fishermen community for the past 35 years, and it has assets worth crores of rupees.

Mr Shetty said that as many as 216 families are dependent on KFDC for their livelihood, and the proposed closure will affect them.

Stating that some boat owners and fish traders owe around Rs 3 crore to the corporation, he said this might have affected its operation to some extent. Added to this, the State Government has not released grants for past several years.

He requested the State Cabinet to take a favourable decision on corporation's revival proposal, which was submitted to the Government by its Managing Director.

The union will extend all possible cooperation for the revival of the corporation, he added.
