Hyderabad , Feb. 8

THE State Cabinet today approved a $300-million (approximately Rs 1,360-crore) project that seeks to reform municipalities and strengthen urban infrastructure in the State.

The Cabinet, which met ahead of the State Budget session later this month, approved the Andhra Pradesh Urban Reforms and Municipal Services (APURMS) project that seeks to support urban sector reforms, improve city management through municipal services, and strengthen city infrastructure.

This is basically to build a mechanism to access the World Bank funds by establishing the Andhra Pradesh Urban Infrastructure Fund (APUF) as a trust.

The project size has been tentatively approved for about Rs 1,360 crore.

A team from the World Bank including its lead economist for the region and other members had last month visited the State to study some of the ongoing programmes.

The World Bank, along with other overseas lending agencies including the Department For International Development of the UK, are actively engaged in the ongoing reform process in the State, covering public enterprise reform, rural education and healthcare, and power.

The Cabinet also approved the proposal of the High Court to enhance the appellate side jurisdiction of the Chief Judge/District Judges in the State from Rs 3 lakh to Rs 5 lakh by amending the Andhra Pradesh Civil Courts Act, 1972 suitably to reduce the number of cases pending in the High Court.

Meanwhile, the State Government is bracing up for the 40-day Budget session of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly slated to commence on February 14.

The Assembly session comes in the backdrop of recent violent incidents, including the murder of TDP legislator, Paritala Ravi, and heightened tensions between the Government and Maoists.

The Government has also placed the draft Budget proposals on the Web site for discussion and feedback.
