New Delhi , Feb. 8

CONVERGYS Corporation today said it plans to double its Business Process Outsourcing headcount in India to about 20,000 within the next one or two years, even as the company expands its software capacity in Hyderabad.

"We have a software development centre in Hyderabad with 600 people, which would be formally inaugurated tomorrow, and are now in the process of embarking on the second phase of expansion in the city. This will enable us to double the software capacity," said Mr Larry S. Schwartz, Executive Vice-President (Global Operations), Convergys Information Management Group, at a news conference here.

He said the company had invested "tens of millions of dollars" in the facility and the timeframe for doubling the software headcount would largely depend on further business growth.

The company develops billing software for telecom firms and its global clientele includes Sprint and BT amongst others. It is also in talks with Indian telecom operators to provide billing software solutions. "However, these discussions are in preliminary stages," Mr Schwartz said while declining to divulge the names of the operators.

On the BPO side, Convergys employs close to 10,000 people in India housed across seven contact centres in Mumbai, Gurgaon, Pune and Bangalore. "We are looking at about 20,000 people in a year or two," Mr Schwartz said.

In line with its expansion plans, the company is also evaluating new locations, including Chandigarh, Chennai, Kolkata and Hyderabad. Besides India, the company has contact centres in the US and the Philippines.

A global player in integrated billing, employee care and customer care services, Convergys Corporation employs close to 63,000 people globally.
