Tribunal seeks DoT reply on entry fee for ISPs

New Delhi , Feb. 8

THE Telecom Dispute Settlement Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) today asked the Department of Telecom to reply within two days on the petition filed by Internet Service Providers challenging its decision to impose an entry fee for offering Virtual Private Network services.

The matter would be heard on Friday (February 11). Mr Ramji Srinivasan, counsel for Internet Service Providers Association of India (ISPAI), said the amendment to the terms and conditions of the ISP licence should be based on the provisions of TRAI Act, which required the Government to seek the recommendations of TRAI.

DoT had sent a notice on January 16 to all the ISPs to either pay up the entry fee ranging between Rs 1 crore and Rs 10 crore or stop offering VPN services. DoT had given a 30-day ultimatum to the ISPs.

Meanwhile, Sify and HCL Infinite have paid up the entry fee to DoT.
