No plan to revise H1 B visa quotas, says US Ambassador

Bangalore , Feb. 8

THE US Ambassador to India, Mr David C. Mulford, has said it was left to the US Congress to decide on the issue of increasing the quota of H1 B visa issued to professionals. Indicating that there was no immediate plan to revise further from 65,000 fixed sometime ago, Mr Mulford said, "We have to abide by the Congress."

India has been pleading for increasing the quota of H1 B visas and in response to that the US had recently enhanced it by 20,000 with a rider that it would be valid until March.

Addressing a press conference here, Mr Mulford reiterated the US' interest in expanding defence commerce with India by its participation in the Aero India International 2005. The US has sent a strong team of defence personnel and displayed its military wares such as F 15 and F 16 fighter aircraft, besides other top military wares.

He said though the US was keen on stronger military cooperation with India, it was for the country to decide on its requirements and choice of suppliers.

Welcoming India's indication to diversify the sources for procurement of defence equipment, Mr Mulford said the indication was given by the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, when he met the US President, Mr George W. Bush, last year.
