Kerala Forest Minister resigns

Our Bureau

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Forests Minister, Mr K.P. Viswanathan, has resigned in the wake of adverse remarks against him by the High Court in a case relating to raids by Forest Department officials on a sandalwood factory in Palakkad.

The Minister announced the resignation in the State Assembly on Wednesday during the course of a reply to the notice for an adjournment motion sought to be moved by an Opposition member who had raised the issue earlier.

Intervening, the Chief Minister, Mr Oommen Chandy, said he was accepting the resignation even though there was no evidence of Mr Viswanathan having breached the oath of office or trust of the House.
