Chamber concern over Bengal move for power duty hike

Our Bureau

Kolkata , Feb. 9

THE Indian Chamber of Commerce, Calcutta, has expressed concern over the West Bengal Government's decision to increase the rate of electricity duty and withdraw exemptions on captive generation in the State.

The chamber fears the electricity duty hike would deter industries from expanding operations in the State.

Commenting on the decision to double the duty from 7.5 per cent to 15 per cent, the chamber said this would erode the competitiveness of the industry in West Bengal, at a time when it is facing stiff challenges in the manufacturing sector.

The chamber said electricity shortages and high tariffs, along with lack of quality power, have compelled the industry to invest scare resources in captive generation. But the withdrawal of exemptions on electricity duty for captive generation will add to the cost structure and affect competitiveness.

The chamber regretted that even captive generation based on waste gas had not been spared.
