BrahMos set for an export launch

Madhumathi D. S.

Bangalore , Feb. 9

AS Indian defence products get increasingly export-oriented, a world first, the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, could be targeting the markets of at least half a dozen friendly countries. Its full market potential and value are yet to be assessed.

The nearly 50:50 Indo-Russian defence venture that has produced the missile is now making it more versatile. It will be immediately going in for a combat aircraft compatible version, possibly on a Sukhoi. The development outlay has been raised for this purpose from the initial $250 million to $300 million for the aircraft version, Dr A. Sivathanu Pillai, CEO and Managing Director of BrahMos Aerospace P Ltd, told Business Line.

BrahMos, which was conceived in 1999 and got developed on a fast-track basis, has readied the land and naval versions. It has been developed by Russian expertise in propulsion and an Indian technology platform.

Named after the Brahmaputra and the Moscow rivers, BrahMos is one of the star entries at the Aero India expo.
