THE Government is likely to announce a new biotechnology policy next month, which would provide a roadmap for development of biotechnology in the agriculture, food, drugs and pharmaceutical sectors.
"The biotech policy draft is ready. We will make it available to other ministries and the industry by the month-end for their comments, which will take four-to-six weeks' time. After studying their suggestions, the final draft will be prepared and later sent to the Cabinet for approval, which is expected by March-end," said Mr M.K. Bhan, Secretary, Department of Biotechnology, on the sidelines of the inauguration of Biotech India 2005 here on Wednesday.
He further stated that all the simplifications concerning the biotech sector, suggested by the Mashelkar Committee and the Swaminathan Committee, would be introduced in the policy.
Mr Bhan said clearance procedures will be simplified in the policy and specific timelines will be framed to speed up clearances in the biotech sector. "The main objective is to simplify the existing mechanism and have a single window regulatory authority," he added.
He said special purpose vehicles might be floated for biotech research institutions. To meet the increasing demand for professionals in life sciences, the Government has also made a blueprint to manage the human resources in the sector to meet its growing needs.
