Building urban infrastructure

This is with reference to the editorial "Building urban infrastructure (Business Line, February 9). As rightly pointed out, the country's urban infrastructure is crumbling and India's cities are growing at a much faster rate than the rest of the world, especially over the past 50 years. It appears that the big cities are beyond redemption unless some miracle takes place. However, it is still possible for smaller cities to take measures to improve the infrastructure.

Many villages are becoming full-fledged cities and a proper town planning will prevent the upcoming cities from getting doomed even before they see the light of the day. Needless to add, population control is an important measure, but that alone is not going to solve the problem unless the political leadership acts properly to improve the conditions of the poor and the downtrodden.
