Ministry seeks nod for capital dredging at Ennore Port

New Delhi , Feb. 10

THE Shipping Ministry has sought an "in-principle" approval from the Planning Commission for undertaking the first phase of the capital dredging project at Ennore Port at an estimated cost of Rs 90 crore.

Ennore Port Ltd, the first corporate major port in the country, proposes to fund the cost of capital dredging through a mix of internal resources and borrowings from Chennai Port Trust and nationalised banks if budgetary support was not forthcoming, a Ministry official said.

The capital dredging works at the port will be executed in two phases. The first phase involves dredging the areas of marine liquid, coal and container berths up to 15 metres to accommodate vessels up to a maximum draft of 13.5 metres.

The second phase involves dredging the port basin and approach channel.

The first phase of the capital dredging project at Ennore Port assumes significance to meet the obligations of the concession agreement entered into by Ennore Port Ltd for the marine liquid terminal and coal terminal for providing alongside depths of 15 metres and deepen the berth area of iron-ore terminal to 18 metres, the official said.
