`Develop IP to enter consultancy league'

Our Bureau

Mumbai , Feb. 10

IT consulting tied with unique IP (intellectual property) can help Indian companies break into the consulting league, according to Mr Francisco D' Souza, Chief Operating Officer, Cognizant Technology Solutions.

Speaking at Nasscom 2005 on IT- Consulting: Will the Offshore Model work?, Mr D' Souza said that the IP can be developed here at a low cost and consulting engagements can be led with a radical IP.

For instance, a pharmaceutical company typically has to manage long lead times in drug discovery, which lead to fluctuating revenues. Any Indian company (specialising in pharma), which develops an IP to manage this problem can use this to open up consulting opportunities.

According to Mr D'Souza, areas such as offshore ability analysis, technology rationalisation and IT/ BPO strategy offer good scope for companies to create a distinct IP to penetrate these markets.

Indian companies can comfortably operate on the lower rungs of the consulting chain.
