Kalam sets higher goal for IT industry

Mumbai , Feb. 10

SMALL aims are a crime. That was the message the President, Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, conveyed to the audience at Nasscom 2005 today. Urging the IT-ITES industry to capture 15 per cent of the global IT market by 2009, he revised the existing target of 3.5 per cent. He also said that without an "indomitable spirit", achieving this target would be difficult.

"The Indian IT-ITES industry should reach the size of around $200 billion (compared to the projected $75 billion) by 2009, when the global business volume in these two sectors would be at $1.2 trillion," Dr Kalam said in his address at the valedictory function of the `Nasscom 2005: India Leadership Forum'.

In a video conference from New Delhi, the President, recovering from a shoulder injury, said that in the global competitiveness index, India is ranked 56. "That is not good news."

He set a target for IT-ITES industry to help India scale that ranking ladder to reach the 10th position by 2009. According to him, this is "doable since our university system contributes over two million graduates every year. Manpower is a vital resource for this industry."
