Women empowerment meet begins in Kolkata

Our Bureau

Kolkata , Feb. 11

THE fifteenth national meet of the forum of Women In Public Sector (WIPS) began here on Friday on the theme: "Empowerment: roadmap to sustainable development and global competitiveness".

The two-day meet, participated by about 500 delegates from public sector enterprises proposed to have deliberations on the empowerment process for women from both macro and micro level. The meet was inaugurated by the Chief Justice of Orissa High Court, Mr Sujit Barman Roy.

The forum feels that steps for rationalisation and restructuring of the empowerment process need to be in place to achieve sustainable and long-term value creation. In fact, sound HR policies incorporating empowerment of women and gender equality needs to be looked at as an important tool. This, in process, will provide the required leadership and gender perspective in all areas of functioning in the PSEs, the forum observes.

In his key-note address, the Vice-Chairman of Standing Conference of Public Enterprises and CMD of Hindustan Paper Corporation , Mr Raji Philip, said that global competitiveness in the context of increasing internationalisation recognised the growing globalisation of factors and forces of production and consumption. PSEs have been bracing themselves to face the challenge of change unleashed by the WTO and other instruments.

Mr Philip said it was imperative that women in PSEs intensify their meaningful engagement with the existing and emerging tasks in the true spirit of trust and togetherness.
