Visakhapatnam , Feb. 11

SEVERAL companies are interested in setting up units in the special economic zone (SEZ) coming up in the vicinity of Atchyuthapuram in Visakhapatnam district and efforts are on to identify and allot suitable sites for them, according to Mr B. Satyanarayana, Minister for Heavy Industries.

He was speaking to newspersons on Friday after participating in the ceremony to mark the swearing-in of the new VUDA Chairman, Mr Suryanarayana Raju.

The Minister said that a company called Campcall had approached the State Government seeking allotment of 1,400 acres in the SEZ to set up a coking coal unit.

The company wants to invest Rs 5,000 crore in phases and the proposal is under consideration, he added.

The Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) too has sought 2,400 acres in the SEZ for setting up a research centre.

Besides, TCL, LG Polymers, and others are evincing keen interest in setting up units.

An IT park is coming up opposite the Ramakrishna Beach over 11 acres and a special industrial estate for women entrepreneurs would also be set up on a 50-acre site near Madhurawada village.

The Minister said that the Government had allocated and sanctioned Rs 100 crore to be paid to the farmers for acquisition of lands for the SEZ. The process would begin this week.

The new airport, which would be ready by 2006, would give a big boost to the industrial growth of the city and also make it a hot tourist destination, he added. Night landing facility would be created.

The road from Anandapuram to Anakapalle would be widened in view of the increasing traffic.
