Need for cos to self-regulate on labour laws

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Feb. 11

EXPRESSING concern at the existing "inspector raj," a senior government official on Friday called for self-regulation by companies in adhering to labour laws.

Addressing a PHDCCI delegation, the Labour Secretary, Mr K.M. Sahni, said, "It is high time the system of self-certification was introduced. If it could work for IT returns, then why not for labour laws?"

Mr Sahni said his Ministry was concerned about the existing inspector raj and will consult trade unions and employers to assess their viewpoint on the subject of adopting self-certification as a means for assessment. A series of workshops in this regard will be held from April.

Speaking on the occasion, the PHDCCI President, Mr K.N. Memani, said that the law should provide for regulation of contract labour and not for its abolition. "There should not be any hurdle in getting the work done through contract labour. The wages and other social security benefits to contract workers should be ensured."
