STRENGTHENING the IPR (intellectual property rights) regime to protect innovators is crucial to increasing US-India collaboration in the life-sciences sector.

Speaking to newspersons, Mr Ron Somers, President of the US India Business Council, said, "Despite recent improvements, we believe that India's intellectual property rights regime is still the single biggest barrier to increased American investment in this area. We will continue to advocate for improvements in the intellectual property protection on behalf of our entire membership." Elaborating on the areas in the Patents Ordinance that could be strengthened, Mr C. Nigel Thompson, Executive Director, Economic and Development Strategy, Merck & Co, said that the definition of patentability should be broadened, something that the domestic pharma companies have opposed.
