Co-operatives Focus on personal attention and service Priya Nair
Mr Narendrakumar Baldota, Chairman and Managing Director, Greater Bank
PERSONALISED attention and quality service, which are perhaps the success mantras for any service industry, are also the hallmarks of Greater Bombay Co-operative Bank Ltd. The urban co-operative bank, which was established in 1952, has 18 branches in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. In a scenario where the image of co-operative banks has taken a beating, Greater Bank continues to enjoy the confidence of the depositors and borrowers, says Mr Narendrakumar Baldota, Chairman and Managing Director of the bank. "The problem with co-operative banks started about three years back, with the closure of Madhavpura Bank. Subsequently, several other co-operative banks also had problems and were closed, due to which now people feel co-operative banks are not safe. But the problem in these banks was bad management and bad planning. It does not apply to the entire co-operative banking sector." He added, "Our record speaks for itself. In 2003-2004 our deposits were around Rs 683 crore, while our advances were around Rs 438 crore. And we have over 21,000 shareholders." Listing the services the bank provides, Mr Baldota said, "We are the only co-operative bank with ISO 9001 certification for all our branches. All our branches are computerized and have ATMs. We are also connected with BANC (an ATM sharing initiative), which gives our depositors access to a wide network of ATMs. We also provide bill centers at our branches, where customers can pay various utility bills such as BMC, electricity, telephone, etc. Our ATMs also offer a unique cheque deposit scheme, where customers can deposit their cheques in the cheque deposit machine and get a receipt for the same. Our branches are open seven days a week and 12 hours a day, for customers' convenience. Personalised cheque books is another service we offer, free of cost." Personal attention and an ambience that is on par with the new generation banks, is an added attraction to the customers of Greater Bank, said Mr Baldota.
