Visakhapatnam , Feb. 13

A SURVEY on the feasibility of developing a light rail transit system (LRTS) here is to be conducted soon.

This was announced by the Minister for Commercial Taxes, Mr Konathala Ramakrishna, after an interaction with the corporators and inspection of various works undertaken by the Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (VMC) here on Sunday.

Mr Ramakrishna said that the LRTS project could be taken up jointly by the VMC and the Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority (VUDA) in a phased manner at a total cost of Rs 2,000 crore.

The project would go a long way in decongesting traffic in the city and its suburbs. The VUDA master plan also envisages development of LRTS.

Jail land: On the opposition to the construction of multiplex and I-max theatre in the old jail site, he said they would take up all the mega projects only after consulting the public.

The conversion of RTC complex exclusively into a city bus terminal was also under consideration, he added.

He said the proposal to dig a tunnel through the hill at Seethammadhara at a cost of Rs 25 crore would help spur growth in Mudasarlova and Adavivaram areas where the VMC owns about 750 acres.

The Minister said a sports village would be set up on the city outskirts and about 150 acres had also been sought for developing a sports college for training young players.

The Bhaba Atomic Research Centre (BARC) had expressed its desire to set up an unit on an area of 3,000 acres.

The Navy also wanted to expand its activities in Rambilli area, he said.
