Egg price scales new peak

G. Gurumurthy

Coimbatore , Feb. 14

FARM-gate price for egg has hit an all-time high of Rs 1.60, surpassing Rs 1.56 registered in January.

Continued demand for egg across several States has resulted in Tamil Nadu table egg sector reaping gains from the price surge for the second successive week.

The extended winter spell in the Northern belt (resetting of cold condition in some places apart) has kept the market warm for the trade. In the South, post-tsunami effects of consumers abstaining from consuming fish, have led to the shift in preference for eggs, the State's egg trade sources said.

The Namakkal-based National Egg Coordination Committee's zonal committee, on finding the market continuing to sustain the high egg demand tract and surging prices in other upmarkets, including Hyderabad and Nellore, has decided to retain last week's rate of Rs 1.60 for the current week too.

The prevailing price trend has encouraged poultry farms in the State to increase the layer bird population, according to the farmers' sources.

The sources told Business Line that the average per day egg production inTamil Nadu, which remained at 10.5 million pieces in 2004, is expected to rise by another 30 per cent this year on additional release of chicks. As against the 183 lakh chicks placed in the farms during calendar 2004, it is anticipated that the chick placement during 2005 may go up to 250 lakh with the average per month release of chicks rising to 20 lakh from last year's 15.2 lakh birds.

The impressive growth in egg exports to around 1,300 containers from the Namakkal region last year has added strength to the higher investment decision by the layer sector in the State, the market sources said.
