Power Damodar Valley updating 10 thermal units Pratim Ranjan Bose
Kolkata. Feb. 14 IN addition to its targeted 1210 MW capacity addition, Damodar Valley Corporation has taken up a renovation and modernisation (R&M) project for revitalisation of its 1092.5 MW capacity from 10 thermal units during the remaining period of Tenth Plan. The R&M project is estimated to cost over Rs 1,300 crore and will be commissioned by August 2007. R&M and residual life assessment studies will also be taken up in four hydel generation units in Maithon and Panchet with a combined capacity of 100 MW out of a total hydel capacity of 144 MW. The 82.5 MW gas turbine facility at Maithon will also be refurbished. The total project cost of renovating both the hydel and gas turbines is estimated to be around Rs 100 crore. According to sources, about 40 per cent of DVC's total thermal capacity of 2745 MW was commissioned between 1950 and 1960, and this has been affecting the overall performance of the corporation. Of the 10 thermal power generation units now chosen for renovation and modernisation, six are closed. The rest are generating at the rate of 25-40 per cent plant load factor (PLF). Post modernisation, all the units are expected to produce at 70 per cent PLF on a sustained basis. The units which will undergo R&M are: 140 MW Unit-III of Durgapur Thermal Power Station (DTPS), Unit I, II and III of 57.5 MW each at Bokaro -A Thermal Power Station (BTPS-`A'), and all six 140 MW units at Chandrapura Thermal Power Station (CTPS). Of these, Unit-III at DTPS and Unit IV, V and VI of CTPS are currently functional. The DVC has also undertaken an extension and augmentation programme for its existing transmission and distribution network. The programme includes addition of 1,686 circuit km of 220 kV and 132 kV transmission lines and the setting up of 11 220 kV and four 132 kV substations.
