EDS to scale up India operations

Moumita Bakshi

The company was, however, not tapping the domestic market at present, Mr Gupte said, indicating that EDS may look at Indian clients later on.

New Delhi , Feb. 14

GLOBAL IT services giant EDS on Monday said it plans to scale up its headcount in India to 5,000 professionals by January next year, for which it will establish new centres in Chennai and Pune.

"We currently have about 600 professionals in business process outsourcing (BPO) operations, which include helpdesk and contact centre. On the IT services side, the company has 2,300 professionals in application services and infrastructure technology operations. We expect to touch a headcount of 5,000 by January 2006," Mr Abhay Gupte, Managing Director, Electronic Data Systems (India), told Business Line here.

For IT services, EDS has centres in Chennai, Mumbai, Pune and Gurgaon. "We already have the capacity to house 3,500 professionals. In line with our plans for expansion, we will launch new facilities. EDS has shortlisted Chennai and Pune for expansion," Mr Gupte said. The company expects the new centres to be operational by September/October.

While declining to comment on specific deals being serviced from India centres, he said, "We largely support three areas: financial services, telecom and manufacturing."

The company is, however, not tapping the domestic market at present, Mr Gupte said, indicating that EDS may look at Indian clients later on. "At present, our strategy is not to focus on the domestic market. For Asia-Pacific, we have certain geographies that we focus on, including Australia," he said.

Last year, EDS announced the formation of the `EDS Agility Alliance,' a federation of global technology leaders to drive industry innovation and cost leadership through the development, selling, delivery and support of joint clients on the EDS Agile Enterprise Platform. The members of the EDS Agility Alliance include Cisco, Dell, EMC, Microsoft, Sun Microsystems and Xerox.

Commenting on the alliance, EDS Italia's Portfolio and Alliance Director, Mr Carlo de Focatiis, who is currently in India as part of a Italian business delegation, said that while the announcement was at the global level, the alliance partners were EDS' partners in India as well.
