KNOWLEDGE management assumes greater significance in higher educational institutions, said the Vice-Chancellor of the Mangalore University, Prof. B. Hanumaiah.
Delivering the founder's day lecture on `Knowledge management for higher education,' organised by the A. Shama Rao Foundation in Mangalore on Monday, he said knowledge management is successfully used in business to improve decision-making capabilities. In the same way, this can also help higher educational institutions in improving their productivity.
Educational institutions have ample opportunities to apply knowledge management practices. However, this should not hit these institutions as a completely new idea, he said.
Stating that two universities with identical numbers of faculty, degree programmes, expenditures, and enrolment may vary widely in their rankings, he said this difference is mainly because of value addition by way of effective knowledge management.
Knowledge management would help colleges to compete in an environment where institutions cross borders to meet the needs of students and it would help retain a technology workforce in the face of severe employee shortages, he added.
